| Bangladesh’s fifteenth Test tour. (June-August 2009) Second Test-playing
tour of West Indies by Bangladesh (previous tour 2004) | Bangladesh were asked to shift their Caribbean tour to July
instead of April, because England
would be playing a Test series against West Indies
in April. The
tour began with the sacking of Mohammad Ashraful as captain. Mashrafe Mortaza was the new skipper but he
lasted only three days of the first Test match before injury prevented him
from playing again on tour. Up stepped
vice-captain Shakib al Hasan who not only galvanised his young side into
playing some of their best cricket but also starred with both bat and ball. Victory
in the two Test matches was hailed as the most important moment since Bangladesh
won Test status in 2000 - the first consecutive Test victories and the second
series victory they had gained. West Indies were greatly weakened by the withdrawal of
players in dispute with their Board over contracts, and the "second
XI" captained by Floyd Reifer batted feebly. Nevertheless Bangladesh won by playing far
better cricket. It would be typical of the critics to diminish the victory
because the opposition was weak, just as they had condemned the heavy defeats
when the opposition was strong! Bangladesh then earned a clean sweep in the three-match ODI
series (3-0) and crowned the tour with a 4-1 victory in the ODI series in Zimbabwe. They
were welcomed home at the airport by long-suffering fans who could at last
celebrate some rare success in international cricket. | All Bangladesh

| Reinforcements | Mashrafe Mortaza was ruled out for the
remainder of the tour by a knee injury sustained during the first Test.
Shakib Al Hasan became captain and Mushfiqur Rahim the vice-captain. As his
replacement Nazmul Hossain
flew out from Dhaka on 13 July for Grenada. Mortaza later underwent successful
arthroscopic surgery to both knees in Melbourne.
Abdur Razzak then strained his hamstring while batting in the
third ODI at St Kitts and returned home to continue with his recovery. Enamul
Haque jnr was named as his
replacement for the Zimbabwe
tour, joining up with the squad in Dubai on
Wednesday 5 August before flying to Zimbabwe. Fast bowler Rubel Hossain was ruled out of the Zimbabwe
series due to a side strain and Nazmul Hossain was nursing a thigh injury, so
replacement fast bowler Dollar Mahmud
flew to Bulawayo.
