Having won a one-day series for the first time, beating England by six matches to two in the ODIs the previous winter, the New Zealanders now finally managed to win a Test match on English soil.

Sean Tracy was on a cricket scholarship.  He was an under-19 New Zealand representative who was called up from English league cricket when Howarth underwent minor abdominal surgery and Snedden had a leg strain.

John Wright broke a toe batting against Leicestershire on 22 August and Smith fractured a finger the next day.

Return to New Zealand

 

After the fourth Test John Wright and Richard Hadlee went to Holland to take part in a single-wicket tournament, so missing the Scarborough Festival match.  On 10 September the team flew from Heathrow Airport on a 28 hour-long flight to Mangere Airport, Auckland.
