Addition to squad:On 29 November Samaraweera was added to the Test tour party as cover for Jayawardene who had a knee injury. Earlier chief selector Mendis had said he would not feature in Sri Lanka's long-term plans to give more opportunities to youngsters.
Withdrawal : Fast bowler Suranga Lakmal withdrew on 30 November owing to an ankle injury.

Uncapped fast bowler Kanishka Alvitigala and seamer Dhammika Prasad flew out to reinforce the team on 19 December when Nuwan Pradeep was forced to return early because of a hamstring tear.Earlier it was reported that Nuwan Kulasekara would go to South Africa with Prasad, but Nuwan's choice was canceled by the Sports Ministry. However, he did go with the one-day squad.
Off-spinner Sachithra Senanayeke replaced Ajantha Mendis who had a recurrence of a back injury
