Test Cricket Tours - New Zealand to Sri Lanka 2002-03

Tour of Sri Lanka 2002-03                     Captain : Stephen Fleming

45th official Test tour.

Fifth Test-playing  tour of Sri Lanka by New Zealand

 (April  -  May  2003)

The 1986-87 and 1992-93 tours of Sri Lanka had been disrupted (by bomb blasts), and this tour, too, seemed t to be threatened by outside events. The SARS outbreak (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) had already claimed 200 lives across Asia, though not in Sri Lanka, but the Boards decided just a few days before that the tour would go ahead.

The two Test matches were drawn. Stephen Fleming scored a personal-best of 274 not out in Colombo as New Zealand piled on 515 for 7 before declaring. Sri Lanka’s response made the match safe for them but another marathon effort by Fleming for 69 not out meant he was on the field for all but 45 minutes of the match. The second Test was drawn with Sri Lanka declining to attempt what had seemed an achievable target

The New Zealanders won a triangular one-day tournament, the Bank Alfalah Cup being their first major limited-overs trophy since the ICC Knockout in 2000 when they beat India to win a mini World Cup in Nairobi.

Postscript

Yet another external disruption to New Zealand versus Sri Lanka Tests would occur when the 2004 tsunami caused the Sri Lankans to abandon their tour of New Zealand.
