Test Cricket Tours - New Zealand to Australia 1993-94

Tour of Australia 1993-94                 Captain : Martin Crowe

29th official Test tour.

Sixth Test-playing  tour of Australia by New Zealand

 (October - December 1993,

           January 1994)

Given five warm-up matches to prepare for the Test series, the New Zealanders coped well with the conditions at Perth - however, this was the only Test of the three in which they avoided defeat.  Martin Crowe winced with pain through his innings at Perth and needed to return home at the end of the match for surgery on a damaged knee.

Already weakened by the loss of their captain and best batsman, Chris Cairns withdrew at the last minute from the second Test at Hobart and the Kiwis suffered their heaviest-ever Test defeat, by an innings and 200 runs. This angered the team management who told him to play in the third Test or go home.

In an unusual arrangement the New Zealanders returned home for Christmas after playing four of their eight one-dayers and returned in January. Although at one stage looking certain to qualify for the World Series finals, South Africa advanced because of their superior run-rate.
