The tour
began with a one-day tournament in Sharjah but without the New Zealand
captain, Ken Rutherford, who was still recovering from an injury. Gavin
Larsen, not yet capped at Test level, led New Zealand for the first time in
his 52nd one-day international. Pakistan’s
Aamir Sohail and Inzamam-ul-Haq put on 263, the highest partnership for any
wicket in one-day internationals, in 42 overs to knock New Zealand out at the semi-final
stage.

The team departed from Wellington for Sharjah
on Tuesday 12 April 1994. They landed at Dubai
International Airport
next day to play in the Australasia Cup ’94 tournament before the tour of England.
Rutherford, Crowe, Greatbatch
and Doull were all recovering from injuries and did not go to Sharjah. They
departed from Wellington on 22 April and would
join the rest of the team in England.
Chris Harris and Mark Douglas
were in the Australasia Cup squad in Sharjah and then left the tour while the
twelve other players arrived in London
on Sunday 23 April 1994.

Stuart Roberts was called up from league
cricket to join the tour party when other fast bowlers suffered injuries. He
first played against the Universities after the second Test.
