Test tour. ( May - August 1999) 13th Test-playing tour of England by New Zealand
(previous tour 1994)
| The I.C.C. World Cup cause a
pleasant surprise as the New Zealanders progressed into the Super Six round
(which hosts England
were unable to do) and reached the semi-final. New Zealand went
one down in the Test series that followed by failing to capitalise on a
100-run lead on first innings. Then the newly-styled ‘Black Caps’ turned the
summer round. Every member of the team contributed well but the accuracy of fast
bowling pair Cairns and Nash, fronting up because Doull and Allott were
injured, had a decisive effect. The nine-wicket victory at Lord’s
was their first win in thirteen Tests played at the home of cricket and only
their third on English soil after winning in 1983 (at Headingley) and 1986 (Trent
Bridge). Winning again at The Oval, this became the second time New Zealand has beaten England in a
Test series on English soil. The first occasion was in 1986. Hundreds of English spectators gathered
in front of Kennington Oval pavilion, booing and chanting as Nasser Hussain
collected the losers’ cheque from sponsors Cornhill Insurance. | All New Zealand Test
