Test Cricket Tours - New Zealand to England, India, Pakistan 1969

Tour of England, India, Pakistan 1969     Captain : Graham Dowling

Ninth New Zealand Test tour

( June - November 1969)

Sixth Test-playing tour of England by New Zealand;

   (previous tour 1965)

Third Test tours of India and Pakistan by New Zealand

   (previous tour 1964-65)

The first touring party sent out of New Zealand for four years appears at first to have been, despite  the players’ efforts, as unsuccessful as any before.  The New Zealanders played in the second half of the English summer, after West Indies had toured there. Seven of the team had toured England before in 1965.

The three-Test series in England was lost two-nil. Confidence was low, and of Lord’s Glenn Turner wrote “We played amateurishly and showed little fight. So many of our side just slogged out.” Despite playing with more resolution in the other two Test matches the lack of covering made the pitches difficult to cope with. Underwood at the top of his form captured twelve wickets at The Oval where largely because to him New Zealand were humbled.

In India, however, New Zealand won a Test match, the only Test then played at Nagpur, to square a three-Test series one-all. Crowd disorder caused some disruption to the final Test before a thunderstorm prevented New Zealand from capturing the three wickets needed to win the third Test after they had reduced India to 76 for 7.

Even better, the New Zealanders then beat Pakistan at Lahore to give them victory in a Test series for the first time.

The team flew from Auckland International Airport (Mangere) on 8 June and landed at Heathrow Airport on 10 June.

Worcestershire released Glenn Turner from his county contract for the second half of the summer and he joined the team in time for the first county match at Bradford.

At the end of the England tour the team left Heathrow Airport, London, on 12 September 1969 landing at Bombay’s Santa Cruz Airport early next  morning in the rain - the monsoon had not yet cleared.

The Indian Board of Control had asked their government for £5000 in the belief that the New Zealanders would use Air India during their tour and on the flights from England. When this did not happen, a second application was rejected and the tour was temporarily placed in jeopardy. The Indian press wrongly accused the New Zealanders of changing their travel plans.

After the Indian tour, they arrived in Karachi at 11 pm on 22 October from Bombay.
