Test Cricket Tours - New Zealand to England 1973

Tour of England 1973                     Captain : Bev Congdon

Eleventh New Zealand Test tour.

(April - July 1973)

Seventh Test-playing tour of England by New Zealand

   (previous tour 1969)

Glenn Turner scored 1000 first-class runs in England before the end of May, a feat not accomplished since Bill Edrich did it before the Second World War.  The vice-captain's feat attracted publicity to the New Zealanders' tour but thereafter Turner made very few runs in the Test matches.

The other major batsman, the captain Bev Congdon, made two large scores in the Test series, centuries which nearly saved one Test match and nearly won another.

New Zealand were set 479 to win at Trent Bridge and fell only 38 runs short of this huge target. They almost achieved their goal of winning a Test match in England for the first time when they gained a first innings lead of nearly 300 at Lord’s but the match was left drawn. The tourists succumbed in the other Test match to the greater all-round strength of Ray Illingworth's efficient England side, and so lost both the Test series and the rain-affected one-day series.

Despite hold-ups to air traffic at Harewood Airport, Christchurch, caused by a fireman's strike at the airport between 4 and 13 April, the tourists were able to get away on 12 April 1973.

They landed at Heathrow Airport, London, on 16 April.

Ken Wadsworth, who had left without tablets to treat his cartilage condition, missed some early practices with a sore right knee.  Bruce Taylor’s departure from New Zealand was delayed by business. He arrived at Heathrow Airport on 2 May when the plane, a Boeing 707, made an emergency landing owing to faulty brakes.

Return to New Zealand

London  Q Auckland

At the end of the tour Glenn Turner and John Parker remained in England, being professional cricketers with Worcestershire. Turner married Sukinder Kaur Gill, 21, at Brentford on 24 July. They subsequently returned to live in New Zealand where she later served as Mayor of Dunedin 1995-2004 and became DNZM.

The team flew out from London on 26 July 1973.  Howarth and five others arrived in Auckland on Sunday 29 July.  The manager Mr Saunders, Congdon and six South Island players arrived in Christchurch later that day.
