Test Cricket Tours - New Zealand to England 1978

Tour of England 1978                     Captain : Mark Burgess

14th New Zealand Test tour.

(June - September 1978)

Eighth Test-playing tour of England by New Zealand

  (previous tour 1973)

Against a background of disruption caused by England losing five of its leading players to Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket, New Zealand had recorded their first-ever victory over England the previous February. Now they hoped to build on that achievement.

The failure of the touring Pakistanis earlier in the 1978 English season was brought about by terribly wet weather and lack of practice besides the shortcomings of the players without their Packer stars. The New Zealanders, too, had a wretched time with the weather.  In damp conditions the batsmen struggled against the England fast bowling attack. The batting (and fielding) were much poorer than was seen among the NZ sides of the early ‘seventies. On the other hand New Zealand’s faster bowlers, though suffering from a number of injuries, did well in the conditions; but the side went down heavily in all three Test matches.

Dick Collinge, unavailable at the time of the original selection, joined the team when injury forced Dayle Hadlee to go home. He was one of six fast-medium bowlers in the Kiwis’ side. Richard Hadlee gave a sign of things to come: Hadlee (13 wickets at 20.76) and Geoff Howarth (296 runs) were the only players able to equal the standards of England’s side.

Selection

Unavailable  :  On 13 March Glenn Turner said he felt he ought to be playing for Worcestershire in his benefit season; Turner offered his services for the third Test and the NZ Board agreed, but then decided that to include him would not be fair on other players.

Hedley Howarth and Richard Collinge were also unavailable, though once Collinge had sold his house and moved to Tauranga, and his wife had completed hospital treatment, he was willing to be called in to the team later.  Hedley Howarth was willing to be one of stand-bys for the tour but was not required.

Tour Party Announced  :  19 March 1978.

Dayle Hadlee was selected subject to a fitness test on his injured back (caused indirectly by a breaking his leg  playing football)

Not selected : David Stead

Stand-bys:   Ewen Chatfield was dropped down to official stand-by and left-armer Graham Thomson included.

The other stand-bys were Hedley Howarth, John Morrison and Warren Lees.

When Dayle Hadlee broke down and returned home early, Gary Troup was called from his Bradford League club, Undercliffe, to open the bowling in the match against Sussex. Troup had to return to Bradford on the Sunday to play in the league and then travel back to Hove that evening.

Now that Dick Collinge had made himself available he, rather than the official stand-by Ewen Chatfield, was called out of retirement to reinforce the tour party’s bowling.

Wayne Larkins, the scorer, played in one match in the Netherlands.
