Test Cricket Tours - New Zealand to Pakistan and India 1976-77

Tour of Pakistan & India 1976-77            Captain : Glenn Turner

13th New Zealand Test tour.

( September -

           December 1976)

Fourth Test-playing tours of Pakistan and India by New Zealand

   (previous tour 1969-70)

The tourists played two Test series in the sub-continent, with only two warm-up matches for preparation in Pakistan and none in India.  Results were disappointing and the visitors lost both series 2-0.

There was much commendable cricket from a side weakened by the unavailability of some of the country’s leading players. The bowlers produced a spirited performance against an imposing Indian batting line-up, but illnesses led to changes in selection not to the team’s advanatge. There were several notable batting partnerships but Turner’s opening partners consistently failed to score well, so the middle-order batting was often placed under pressure.

The tourists also felt they were victims of some dubious umpiring, and the team debated walking away from the third Test as a protest against bad decisions.

Glenn Turner was appointed captain on 7 April.  As a professional cricketer, he considered withdrawing over his fees, because the Board wanted to pay him on the same basis as amateur players some of whom would be paid by their employers as well as earning a tour fee.

Unavailable  :  Bevan Congdon (business reasons),  Hedley Howarth.

Tour Party Announced  :  25 April 1976.

Withdrawal:  Ken Wadsworth was ill and Lees replaced him.

On 8 August Dayle Hadlee withdrew for family reasons, as did Brian McKechnie with a finger injury.  They were replaced by Gary Troup and Geoff Howarth a week later.
